When can I retire?

Normal retirement age for special firefighter members of the FPS 2006 Special Members scheme is age 55. If you choose to retire at or after this age, your pension would be put into immediate payment.

For details of how this pension is calculated view the How is my pension worked out page.

An ill-health pension may be payable at any age.

If you leave the FPS before becoming entitled to payment of either of the above awards you may be awarded a deferred pension. This would be payable from –

  • normal benefit age, which is age 60 for special firefighter members, or
  • at your request and subject to appropriate medical certification, at any age, on grounds of permanent disability which prevents you from undertaking regular employment.

The FPS 2006 SPECIAL Retirement Decision Tree outlines the various options for retirement.
