For retained firefighters

When did you join?

Retained firefighters joining on or after 1 April 2015 will be in the FPS 2015 Scheme

For more details go to the FPS 2015 scheme section.

Retained firefighters with service on or between 6 April 2006 and 31 March 2015 or who, if serving before that date, were not eligible for or declined the option to have pension cover under the 2006 Retained Modified Scheme are known as  “standard” retained members in the FPS 2006 Scheme

For more details go to the FPS 2006 scheme section.

Retained firefighters joining before 6 April 2006 were not automatically eligible to be in the firefighters’ pension scheme. The exclusion of retained firefighters from FPS 1992 was challenged and resulted in a settlement which allowed certain retained firefighters with service between 1 July 2000 and 6 April 2006 to have "special" membership of FPS 2006 based on their employment during this period. They could not be admitted to the FPS 1992 because that is now a closed scheme. However, the rules of the FPS 2006 were adapted (in 2014) for special members so that, in places, they reflect the rules of the FPS 1992. This is called the 2006 Scheme for Special Members. They have retrospective effect for those who are eligible to join under the special terms, who elect for “special membership”, and who pay the appropriate contributions.

For more details go to the 2006 Scheme for Special Members.

Although you joined the 2006 Scheme for Special Members you may transition into the 2015 scheme. More details about transitioning and protections can be found at Will I move into the 2015 scheme?.
